AI Artists on Spotify

I love music. What it is, what it can be, and the way it connects people. I love going to live shows and discovering new artists whenever I get the chance. Music has always felt deeply human to me, which is why the growing presence of AI generated artists on Spotify gives me great pause.

There’s an important distinction to be made between using AI as a tool in music production and presenting AI systems as fully formed artists. While I believe AI can support creativity, I struggle to consider something art when it’s created entirely by compiling data from human made work without the consent of the artists whose music trained those systems.

While I personally use Spotify as my primary streaming platform, the issues discussed here are not exclusive to Spotify. AI generated music and AI assisted artists are also appearing across other streaming services, including Apple Music, Pandora, and similar platforms, where transparency and clear labeling remain equally important.

The Rise of AI-Generated Music on Streaming Platforms

AI music is becoming increasingly common on streaming platforms, sometimes without clear disclosure. In many cases, listeners have no way of knowing whether the artist they’re supporting is a human musician, a fully AI-generated project, or a hybrid of both.

I believe that transparency in AI music is essential. Listeners should be able to make informed decisions about what they’re hearing and who or what they are supporting.

Clear AI Artist Labeling is Needed

One possible solution is the introduction of clear, standardized labels on artist pages, such as:

  • This artist is fully AI-generated

  • This artist used AI tools to assist in production

These designations are not the same and treating them as interchangeable undermines both human musicians and listeners. AI assisted music production including mixing, mastering, and engineering can be incredibly helpful, especially for independent artists who may not yet have access to professional resources or those just starting out with a limited budget and time constraints.

Technology has always played a role in music creation. What’s different now is the lack of visibility when AI moves from being a tool to being presented as the artist itself.

Why Transparency Protects Artists and Listeners

Labeling AI generated artists isn’t about restricting creativity, it’s about honesty. Presenting fully AI generated music as equivalent to human created art, without disclosure, is misleading. For fans who value live music, artistic intention, and human expression, this distinction matters.

To help increase awareness, I’ve compiled a list of Spotify AI artist pages that appear to be fully AI generated. The goal isn’t to tell anyone what to listen to, but to give people the information they need to decide for themselves.

Music thrives on connection, experience, and shared humanity. As AI-generated content continues to grow, platforms like Spotify have a responsibility to make those distinctions clear—so listeners can continue to engage with music in ways that align with their values.
